The Ugly Rhea establishes an intertextual connection with the story of "The Ugly Duckling." The work portrays the rhea, which is constantly shaped by the environments it traverses, lost and uncertain about its own species identity and existence. Despite its confusion about its very being, it is born and destined to live and remain as a rhea. However, this piece is not about rheas. Through this metaphor, Niara Terena explores themes of identity, belonging, and transformation.
