International Theatre Workshop is the title of a new programme series initiated by the festival THEATERFORMEN. On the one hand it presents unusual theatre concepts from all over the world to audiences in Hannover. On the other hand it offers an opportunity for young artists from Germany and abroad to work together and experiment in workshops and seminars.
The theme of the International Theatre Workshop 2007 in Hannover is CULTURE IS OUR WEAPON.
We have invited artists who deal with social conditions in their respective cultural communities and change them through their work. The starting points differ just as much as the artistic approaches. These range from sociological scientific research to new interpretations of classical texts and the recording of thoughts and experiences. Both the working process and its result are always directly connected to a specific social situation, usually seen as critical.
The most prominent example of this are AfroReggae from Rio des Janeiro, a group of artists who set up workshops in the slums of Rio and started a social movement which has spread all over Brazil. Using documentary material, songs, music and dance, their show presents their success story. The AfroReggae artists will work with young people from various youth centres in the Hannover region who will make a short appearance in the AfroReggae show.
In Cape Town, the young writer Lara Foot Newton has taken a look at the ever-deepening gap between the races in South Africa and written a play based on a process of research and text development unique in South African theatre. This production was coproduced by the festival THEATERFORMEN and will have its world premiere in Hannover.
Artists from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Russia, the USA and Uzbekistan will also be participating in the International Theatre Workshop. The International Theatre Workshop is supported by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, the TUI Stiftung and the Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover.

The HipHop-band Afroreagge stands out for its artistic virtuosity as much as for its social effect. The group, the self-called warriors for peace, have been working in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro since 1992 and aim to offer socially and politically excluded children and youngsters an alternative to violence and drug trade, thus giving them a future. Art and culture are at the same time the means and the result of a social and individual process of development. The band has gained international fame with its music, enthusing audiences all over the world with driving beats and critical texts. Running up to the two performances in the Schauspielhaus, four of the bands percussionists will run a workshop with young people from various youth centres in Hanover, teaching percussion, movement and how to build instruments from scrap material. Musicians from the Police Orchestra of Lower-Saxony will also take part in the workshop. All workshop participants will appear on the stage of the Schauspielhaus as part of the AfroReggae show. The performance is therefore more than an arts event, it becomes an experience shared by performers and audience. The intimacy of the performers and the immediacy of their story turn this performance into a moment of communal celebration. 2b theatre company develops texts and scenes based on research and improvisation. These are examined, changed and boiled down to their core with regard to content and form in the course of the rehearsal process. In a workshop, Christian Barry, one of the companys artistic directors, and the actors Michelle Monteith and Steven McCarthy will present their working method to young theatre professionals and students from the region. The participants will work on heir own scenic and text material and present this at the end of the workshop.

Theatre workshop and seminar with Bruce Gladwin and members of Back to Back Theatre AUSTRALIA
In cooperation with: Projekttheater Klatschmohn, Theaterpdagogisches Zentrum Hannover, Sozialpdagogisches Institut der Universitt Hannover, Theatergruppe der WfbM (Werkstatt fr behinderte Menschen) der Behindertenhilfe Berkhpen-Burgdorf GmbH, Theatergruppe der Pestalozzi-Stiftung Burgwedel, Integrative Theatergruppe des Theaters Hameln
Theatre workshop and seminar with Bruce Gladwin and members of Back to Back Theatre. What makes the work of Back to Back Theatre so special is on the hand its ensemble: professional actors considered intellectually disabled. More important, however, is the fact that this is not seen as disability, but enrichment, as the actors bring their own unique and often subversive view of the normal world and its social reality into the work.
Back to Back productions therefore do not show the normal as given, but as man-made, and dare to raise the question of human value in todays society anew.
Bruce Gladwin, artistic director of Back to Back Theatre, and ensemble members will run an improvisation workshop and present the groups working method in a practical way. The workshop aims at participants from the region, who are considered intellectually disabled and have already got theatre experience.
In a seminar, Bruce Gladwin will present the working method of Back to Back Theatre to professionals with an interest in the subject: social workers, carers, doctors, theatre pedagogues etc. The seminar is open to the public, registration requested: welcome (at) theaterformen.de
