Rebellious mix of dance performance and pop culture
The unpronounceable title of nora chipaumire’s brand-new, three-part choreography takes us straight to her musical home and the styles that weren’t just popular in Zimbabwe at the time: punk, pop and Congolese rumba. Each of the three plays invited is a homage to one musician – Patti Smith, Grace Jones, Rit Nzele – and an exploration of their work. Working with the Jamaican dancer Shamar Watt, the New York punk guitarist David Gagliardi, the South African DJ Atiyyah Khan and the composer Philip White, nora chipaumire grooves her way through the music styles, the ideologies they are based on and their corresponding body languages. chipaumire’s trilogy is a harsh critique of capitalism with its fundamental racist assumptions and a burning plea for the recognition of black African artists and their work, which is an essential part of music and art history.
