Homage to the most invisible person in the theatre

If one day there is nothing left of the theatre building but ruins, nothing left of the stage, the backstage, the workshops or the offices, then one thing will surely still be tangible – the spirit of the place, its breath, embodied by the prompter. This is how playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues imagines it. In his play, the otherwise invisible prompter steps into the spotlight for the first time. She does it a bit reluctantly, somewhat warily and grumpily, because she really doesn’t have such a high opinion of this innovative directing idea and isn’t making a secret of the fact that she’s only following the director’s orders out of loyalty to her theatre. And so she prompts her memories to the actors, from her first visit to the prompter’s box as a child to the current day almost thirty years later, on which she, possibly, if the director will absolutely not let her go and if that’s what the audience wants – and they had better not have any big expectations, God knows it won’t be anything special in the end – will perhaps finally have her own say.
