DERYA YILDIRIM
Vibration of the vocal cords: Derya Yıldırım sings, no, blasts it out, and her voice sounds so loud and yet like a bending wave speaker. As though micro-effects had been inoculated into her voice box. With her band Grup Şimşek, she plays classics from Turkish pop and her own songs. Solo, she plays the saz and other stringed instruments, and then her voice shines even brighter: she sings about brokenness in the Hamburg neighbourhood of Veddel – that’s where Yildrim comes from – and the beauty of butterflies and mountain meadows. As mentioned, it’s all in her voice, not the lyrics.
