Collisions
Virtual journey into a radioactive landscape
Collisions takes us on a journey into the Western Australian Pilbara Desert and the memories of Nyarri Morgan. As a young man, without any warning at all, he became a first-hand witness of one of the many atomic tests carried out by the British military in the 1950s in the Australian desert. The dead kangaroos literally flew past him; he believed it was an act of God that provided his community, the Martu, with food for many weeks. With virtual-reality glasses and headphones, using songs, historical, new and animated film material, we are immersed in a narrative in which multiple levels of time and experience collide. Narrated by video artist Lynette Wallworth and by Nyarri Morganās grandson, Curtis Taylor, the story allows events separated by generations to collide. In this way, Collisions creates connections between human actions and how we treat our environment and resources, and places them in the context of their long-term consequences.
